The monastery "St. Dimitrija” is located about two kilometers south of the town of Veles in the Veles gorge, on the right side of the river Vardar, south of the river Topolka and its inflow into Vardar.
The origins of the monastery date back to ancient times, as evidenced by some historical data, written by several travel writers, historians, archaeologists, telling older people. But the monastery is thought to date back to the Middle Ages and perhaps much earlier, when the old city of Vilazora still existed. Such a conclusion can be reached through archeological and other finds in the 5th and 6th centuries, when there were other temples near Vilazora. In the 14th century, it was rebuilt by Tsar Dushan's ruler, Radenko, with his mother.
An interesting phenomenon in this monastery is the bell tower itself, which is connected to the monastery church and looks like it is an integral part of the western side. Until the middle of this century, shortly after the end of World War II, ancillary monastery buildings in the courtyard served as lodgings and warehouses. On the east side, along the entire length of the north-south monastery yard, there were two buildings consisting of a ground floor and a first floor. The cattle of the village guests took refuge on the ground floor, coming to the monastery glory of St. Dimitrie, the first Friday after Easter, and on other major holidays.
In the 14th century, this monastery was buried, until it was excavated again in the thirties of the 19th century, by several prominent people from Veles, for which there is a memorial plaque in the monastery. Jordan Hadzi-Konstantinov-Jinot and Evlija Celebija also testify about the congestion of the monastery in their articles. According to folklore, the monastery is believed to have been buried due to the arrival of the Turks. There is a possibility that the monastery was buried due to a landslide of rocks and stones, which often happens at the church of St. Panteleimon in Veles.

Veles Fortress (Kale) - a fortress that lies 2 km south of the city of Veles, in the river gorge at the mouth of Topolka in Vardar. Kale is an elongated plateau, completely flattened above and with steep slopes, 50-60 m high above the rivers. A smaller saddle in the south separates it from the higher mountains. The fortress controls two important roads that lead to its foothills: the Vardar highway and the old road Veles - Prilep, which led along Topolka.

In the southern part of the plateau rises a small pacifier, on which a small roadside guard was built in late Roman times. During the 5th and 6th centuries, it was rebuilt into a very strong acropolis, fortified with several towers and bastions. The plateau north of it (large 350 x 80 m) is now surrounded by a wall to accommodate the population. The fortress controlled the two mentioned paths.

The strategic importance of the Veles fortress was also noticed in the Middle Ages. We do not know why the Slavic settlement at that place got the name of Veles, the god of the underworld and the protector of cattle. The old acropolis was rebuilt and Veles became a church and regional center during the 10th century. In the historical events of the 13th century, the role of Veles grew, as a geographical connection between the Middle and Upper Povardarie, Pelagonija and Bregalnica. Now a new wall has been built around the castron, which measured a length of 470 m. The new wall is placed outside the older remains, but it is parallel to them, and is reinforced with more towers and massive bastions in the north and south. The parts of the eastern city wall are preserved to this day at a height of up to 8.5 m, almost to the original crown. The wall is only 1.3-1.6 m wide. The main gate is built in the northeast. The Acropolis received new walls and at least 5 towers.

From a weak spring south of the fort, water was pumped through ceramic pots to the fort. On the slope northeast of the fortress, in the narrow area to Vardar and the mouth of Topolka, a small civilian subdivision was formed. In the 14th century, the churches of St. Sunday, St. Dimitrija and St. Nicholas. At the northern end, the dead were buried - graves with jewelry from the 13th to the 14th century were discovered here.

The written documents mention Veles several times. In the charter of Basil II from 1019 Veles is listed as an Enorian seat under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Pelagonija (Bitola). Throughout the 13th century, Veles changed its masters several times; it is first under Dobromir Strez from Prosek, then under the Epirus, Bulgarians, Nicaeans. A detailed description of how Nicaea's emperor Theodore II Lascaris was preserved in 1255 is preserved. he returned Veles under his rule, forcing 500 Bulgarian troops to surrender to him (cf. Chapter VI. 2, 2).

In 1272 A military commander, Archbishop Theodore Kalabak, has been spotted. In 1330 After the battle of Velbuzd, the Serbs took the border fortresses of Veles, Cresce and Prosek from Byzantium. As the border has now been moved far to the south, Veles has lost its former strategic importance. As part of the wall, the civilian town of Veles, a large 3.5 ha, continued to live. The Turks conquered Veles probably in 1385. (according to F. Babinger).

The Turks established a new settlement, the Ljuprili barracks at the river crossing two kilometers north of the Christian town, and left a small military crew on the fort. Only the suburbs survived, and in the 19th century another house stood there. Today, only the three mentioned churches function there, and around St. Dimitrija was built a monastery complex.

The memorial Tomb in Veles dates back to the eternal resting place of hundreds of Veles fighters who died in the WWII for liberation from the Fascist occupiers. The idea of the form is a poppy flower that blossoms and marks the birth of something new (on the other hand there is the association of a crack helmet - a symbol of defeated fascism).

The authors of this grandiose architectural work were Savo Sogotin (architectural engineer) and Ljubomir Denkovic (academic sculptor) from Novi Sad.
The facility was put into operation on October 11, 1979 by General Costa Niki, who at the time was president of the "Fighters Association of Yugoslavia".
Central to the interior is a sculpture of a blossoming tree - a symbol of freedom, and beneath it is the fighter's crypt. The sculpture is a tree of life and the awakening and blossoming of the tree symbolizes the birth of a new life.

Along the walls lies the largest mosaic complex in Macedonia of about 220m2.

The interior artwork is the work of the academic painter from Skopje, Petar Mazev, who presented the history of the Macedonian people through a composition of five mosaics, starting from the Ottoman period until the 90s of the XX century. The mosaic is made of natural and artificial stone from Venetian paste, and symbols and shapes are visualized through the use of a multitude of colors.

VELES
City of revolutionaries

Veles is located in the central part of Macedonia, on the banks of the river Vardar. Veles is the sixth most populous city in Macedonia with a total population of 43,716 (2002). Veles has a very favorable geographical position because it is a crossroads of international roads and railways and one of the main transit centers in Macedonia.

Throughout history, Veles has been called by different names, three of which are the most used. Since the founding of the city, Veles has been called Vilazora. Later, in the Ottoman Empire, the city was renamed Ljupurli, which was later replaced by today's name. During the FR Macedonia, but also in the first years of the country's independence, Veles was named after Titov Veles, in honor of Marshal Josip Broz - Tito.

Veles as a settlement has existed since 168 BC. and was located a little further east than today's location. Because the city has a strategic position, it has often been the target of various foreign invasions and occupations and has been part of various Balkan kingdoms and states, starting with Paeonia and ending with the SFRY.

Veles is important and famous for many things. The city was home to many Macedonian revivalists, revolutionaries, writers and poets and it is one of the cradles of Macedonian culture, and throughout history is found as the city of the first theater in Macedonia, the city of the first library, the first high school, the first music school, and the first museum.

The city is characterized by its typical Veles and old town architecture. Veles is one of the industrial centers of Macedonia and an important trade, transport and economic center.

_______
CASTEL ABOVE THE RIVER PČINJA

The prehistory of the Castel is mystical and difficult to determine; therefore, until recently, researchers have been unable to unravel its genesis. The waves of the river Pčinja and the conquerors who burned it down during their raids often changed its colours and the structure of its population.
Around 3500 BC, the insignificant village with its nameless dwellers was forced to dig trenches and erect palisades in order to protect themselves from the raiders who came from the north. The answer to the question whether the land tillers and goat breeders by the river Pčinja belonged to the Brigues or were culturally close to them remains illegible on the historical pages. The few fragments of ceramic vessels that have been discovered, earlier in date than 1000 BC, come from the ceramic ware from which the members of the Paeonian tribes ate, vessel from which they fed, those Paeonians who fought on the side of the Trojans in the wars against the Achaians. As one of the northwest settlements which bordered with Dardania, the Paeonian settlement was undoubtedly administratively dependant on the urban centre of Bylazora built approximately 20 km from this site.
Its Macedonian period, from the 4th century BC to the 1st century AD , as well as its Roman period and the period until the 4th century are still veiled in mystery. As a castellion, this settlement acquired its strategic importance and played an important role in the 5th, 6th and 7th centuries due to the control it had over the Antique and mediaeval road from Thessalonica to Scupi (Skopje). In the fortress, the Christian population built a church in which it prayed until the early 7th century, when it was conquered by the barbarian tribes from the north. The church site itself is impressive and aweinspiring, as it leaves the impression that it hovers above the river Pčinja. The stone mobiliary that has been discovered on this site testifies to the inventiveness, creativity and great originality of the stonemasons’ feeling for artistic expression.
At the same time, the local bakers, blacksmiths and traders led their daily lives on the tall cliffs near the Acropolis. It should be noted that only 5 km north of the castellion stands Bederiana, the native village of the Byzantine Emperor Justin I (518-527), the uncle of the great Justinian I (527-565).
From the 7th to the 11th centuries this settlement and fortress fell into oblivion and was covered with the darkness of the Middle Ages. The revival of the Byzantine Empire in the 11th century restored it to life and the castellion gained in significance once again, a phase which persisted until the Ottoman conquest in the late 14th century. It is highly probable that once a monastery stood on this site, a fact recorded in the imperial documents kept today in he Russian monastery of St.
Panteleimon on Mount Athos. According to a document which dates from the 14th century, Jacob, metropolitan of Serres, was endowed with the monastery and the surrounding territory and property as an imperial gift, and was in charge of its administration. In all probability, he spent the last years of his life in a cell hewn in a cave under the steepest and southernmost cliffs at the foot of the castel.
In the Middle Ages, the inhabitants of the castellion were buried on the westernmost stretch of land above the river Pčinja, the site where their graves have been discovered, as well as a church in which the last rites for the deceased were performed.
The kastrophylax had the best and most privileged view of the surrounding area, who administered the region from the highest pirg (tower). The tower and the residential area are the most impressive architectural complex which, today, can hardly be overlooked or ignored by the visitors; it is also very likely that they included chambers for concubines.

Only for the citizens of the Municipality of Veles
The administration of the Municipality of Veles does not want to support and help the existence of this 360° Visual presentation.

Although, in September 2019, with the then Mayor Ace Kocevski, an Agreement was signed for the production of this 360° Visual presentation, with which it was necessary to pay for its production once a year, and you were the first municipality in Macedonia that supported this Project, in 2022 , the new administration, does not want to extend the Agreement.

The proposal for the re-establishment of cooperation is submitted by the advisory group of "Levica" to the Council session on November 29, 2022, and the Mayor gives the excuse that, "because the ownership of the materials is with "Macedonia na dlanka" - Agency for Tourism and Marketing, a cooperation agreement should not be signed", although neither the Mayor nor the Municipal Administration asked to buy these materials, the value of which is several times higher than the amount that should have been agreed upon for an annual subscription.

And, the amount in the Agreement includes: server maintenance, internet connection maintenance, marketing on social networks, marketing and representation at tourism fairs, as well as paid advertisements throughout the Balkans...

Thanks to Igor Smilev and other representatives of "Levitsa" in the Council of the Municipality of Veles, for recognizing this Project and trying to "convince" the Mayor and other councilors...

The link for this 360° Visual presentation of the Municipality of Veles is still active on the official website of the Municipality.
So they want to use without paying.

However, the existence of the 360° Visual Presentation of the Municipality of Veles depends only on the good will of the Author, with the desire to show the world, and the millions of tourists who pass by Veles, on their way to Greece and vice versa, what they can see and visit in Veles and the surrounding area, and what kind of cultural and historical heritage it brings... and thus a benefit for the residents of the Municipality of Veles.
